UNESCO office of the Municipality of Florence

We have been responsible for the identity of the UNESCO office dedicated to the World Heritage Site of the historic center of Florence since 2015. Our goal was to enhance the timeless character of this artistic heritage, while looking towards the future. We designed its new logo, two different websites, several graphic animations, and three editorial publications.

One Shape, One Perimeter

The logo shape is based on one of the most recurring geometric figures in the Florentine art and architecture. The octagon is found in the base of Brunelleschi’s dome and the plan of the San Giovanni Baptistery. It also appears in the fountain that stands in the First Courtyard of Palazzo Vecchio, as well as in many panels adorning the ceiling of Salone dei Cinquecento. The chosen logo thus evokes a simple yet highly significant geometric shape for the history of this city and its Historic Center.

Illustrating Florence

To welcome visitors landing on the website, we included an animated illustration on the landing page representing Florence historic center, growing within the octagon symbol of UNESCO – Florence.

We used a consistent style for illustrating items, icons and monuments used as markers for the website main pages.

A Digital Heritage

We designed a clean layout with the goal of enhancing the white/blue color palette of the visual identity.

Its navigation is intuitive and responsive for all devices, highlighting the office’s activities, publications, initiatives and all the useful information for users – both locals and tourists – visiting Florence.

A Perspective Report

The Management Plan includes the distinctive graphic elements of the brand and its color palette, framing them into a clean and minimal layout. The report analyzes those UNESCO projects planned for the future.

UNESCO

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) was established in London in November 1945 as a specialized agency of the United Nations.

The organization’s objective is to “contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among nations through education, science, and culture in order to ensure universal respect for justice, the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the United Nations Charter for all people, without distinction of race, sex, language, or religion.”

The UNESCO Office of the Municipality of Florence is responsible for the direct protection of the Historic Centre of Florence, which has been inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1982.
